Southwest Airlines to End Open Seating Policy in January

Southwest Airlines has announced the official date it will end its long-standing open seating policy. Starting January 27, 2026, all passengers will receive assigned seats — a first in the airline’s history.

The move to assigned seating was first revealed by the airline last summer, but the implementation date was just confirmed. Seat assignments will be based on fare type, with options including standard, preferred, and extra legroom seating. Passengers will be able to purchase tickets with assigned seating starting next week.

Southwest has also announced changes to its baggage policy. Earlier this year, the airline revealed it would no longer offer two free checked bags to many customers, marking a significant shift from its previous approach.

These changes come as the airline seeks new ways to increase revenue amid a competitive travel market.
