Overturned Big Rig Sparks Fire, Shuts Down I-10 Near Cactus City
A semi-truck crash Tuesday afternoon near Cactus City led to a fiery wreck and brush fire that shut down part of Interstate 10.
The California Highway Patrol says the incident happened around 12:25 p.m. on the eastbound side of I-10 near the Cactus City rest area. According to officials, the big rig lost control, veered off the freeway, and overturned alongside a frontage road and underpass.
The driver was able to escape the wreckage before flames spread from the engine to the entire vehicle. Fire quickly jumped to nearby brush, sparking a vegetation fire in the area.
The crash prompted a full shutdown of westbound I-10 lanes. Caltrans reports traffic is being diverted to Box Canyon Road as crews work to clear the scene and contain the fire.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no injuries have been reported at this time.
Update:
The CHP has confirmed a person was found dead inside the cab of the semi.
