Ozzy Osbourne, Heavy Metal Legend and Cultural Icon, Dies at 76

Ozzy Osbourne, the trailblazing rocker who redefined heavy metal and became a cultural icon through his music and reality TV fame, has died at the age of 76.

Born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham, England, in 1948, he left school at 15 and found early inspiration after hearing The Beatles. In 1968, he became the lead singer of Black Sabbath, helping create a genre-defining sound with heavy riffs and dark lyrical themes. Albums like Black Sabbath and Paranoid catapulted the band—and Osbourne—to worldwide fame.

His off-stage behavior, often just as loud as his music, earned him notoriety and the nickname "Prince of Darkness." But drug and alcohol issues led to his firing from the band in 1979.

Osbourne rebounded with help from Sharon Arden, daughter of Black Sabbath’s manager, who later became his wife and longtime manager. His solo debut, Crazy Train, launched a new chapter in his career. The couple married in 1982 and remained partners in both life and business.

In 2002, a new generation came to know Osbourne through the hit MTV reality series The Osbournes, showcasing his dry humor, chaotic home life, and endearing parenting moments.

Despite decades of health struggles and a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 2020, Osbourne continued to create music. His 2022 album Patient No. 9 earned him two more Grammys, bringing his total to five.

Osbourne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice—once with Black Sabbath and again as a solo artist. He recorded over 20 albums and reunited with his Black Sabbath bandmates for their final album, 13, and farewell tour in 2016.

From metal pioneer to reality TV dad, Ozzy Osbourne leaves behind an indelible legacy of music, rebellion, and resilience. He was a man, a myth, and undeniably, a legend.
