Ozzy Osbourne, Legendary Black Sabbath Frontman, Dies at 76
Ozzy Osbourne, the iconic frontman of Black Sabbath and one of the founding voices of heavy metal, has died at the age of 76. His death comes just weeks after his final performance, marking the end of an era in rock music.
In a statement released by his family, they shared, “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.”
Osbourne revealed in 2020 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease following a serious fall. Despite ongoing health issues, he remained a significant figure in music and pop culture until the very end.
Known for his gothic image, raw vocals, and controversial stage antics — including the infamous moment when he bit the head off a bat — Osbourne was both criticized and celebrated for pushing the boundaries of rock performance. His transformation later in life into a soft-spoken, quirky family man was widely seen on MTV’s hit reality series The Osbournes.
Black Sabbath’s 1969 debut album, Black Sabbath, is considered a milestone in the birth of heavy metal. Released during the height of the Vietnam War, the album’s dark, ominous tone stood in stark contrast to the psychedelic optimism of the era. With eerie visuals and thunderous music, it helped usher in a new era of rock — one fueled by angst, power, and rebellion.
