New Sales Tax Funding Major Community Projects

Palm Desert residents will get a chance to see where their 1% sales tax is going this morning. The Palm Desert Finance Committee is reviewing the project Tuesday at their regularly scheduled meeting.

According to a quarterly report being presented to the Finance Committee today. The one-cent sales tax, which went into effect April 1, 2025, is projected to have generated $4 million in only three months.

"The City of Palm Desert has made significant progress in implementing its Five-year Spending Plan for Measure G, approved by voters in November 2024," the staff report states.

The tax is projected to generate approximately $24.3 million annually in subsequent years, providing a stable funding source for essential city services.

Where the Money Goes

The quarterly report shows 77.8% of Measure G initiatives are currently in progress, with 11.1% completed and 11.1% available as needed. Major expenditures include:

Fire Station Construction and Operations ($49.9 million over five years): Construction of Fire Station 102 nears completion, with staffing expected in the upcoming year as well. The project includes $16.3 million in encumbrances and $2.8 million projected for fiscal year completion.

City-Wide Facility and Equipment Replacement ($48.3 million over five years): The largest initiative covers ongoing facility improvements and equipment replacement across city operations, with $13.5 million already spent and $13.8 million projected for this fiscal year.

Regional Park Development ($30 million over five years): Planning and initial development stages are underway for the new regional park, with $545,805 in current expenditures.

Stormwater Infrastructure Improvements ($22.2 million over five years): Critical infrastructure projects to maintain and improve the city's stormwater management, with $2.4 million spent and $2.5 million projected this year.

Community Impact and Transparency

The report emphasizes transparency, noting that "100% of the funds generated by Measure G will go directly to the City of Palm Desert to be reinvested in the community." Revenue is collected by the State of California and distributed quarterly, with regular reports presented to the Finance Committee for public review.

Police and Public Works Investments

Police Department staffing initiatives received $665,189 in funding, supporting recruitment efforts to increase sheriff's deputies and enhance technology investments. Public Works staffing, completed in Year 1, utilized $113,500 to hire three additional employees supporting citywide growth.

The city has also allocated $2.4 million for stormwater infrastructure improvements, including an $8 million matching grant to support these critical projects.

Looking Ahead

Measure G appears positioned to deliver on voter expectations. The five-year revenue projection shows steady growth, from $4 million in the current fiscal year to over $25.5 million by 2028-29.

The Finance Committee will review these findings at today's 10 a.m. meeting in the Administrative Conference Room at City Hall, 73-510 Fred Waring Drive. Public participation is available both in-person and via Zoom.

The quarterly reports will continue providing regular updates on how these tax dollars are being invested in the community, ensuring accountability and transparency as promised during the campaign.
