Palm Springs Planning Commission Reviews Surf Club After Noise Complaints
The Palm Springs Planning Commission is reviewing the operations of the Palm Springs Surf Club tonight following dozens of noise complaints from nearby residents.
Homeowners in the Tahquitz Canyon neighborhood say they've had enough of loud bass and booming music coming from the park’s wave machine and outdoor events. Despite more than 66 formal complaints, many residents feel the city has yet to take effective action.
“As the day goes on, the bass gets louder and louder and our houses shake,” one resident shared. “Our dogs get anxiety, and we can't enjoy our evenings.”
While city code compliance has acknowledged ongoing violations, residents say enforcement efforts have not gone far enough. “Their job is only to mark down the issue,” one local explained. “They don’t implement fines or take further action.”
Longtime residents Dan and Marlene, who have lived in the area for 30 years, say there's a double standard. “We can’t have music in our backyard or we risk losing our rental license. Why is that enforced for us, but not for the surf park?”
According to Planning Commission documents obtained by NBC Palm Springs, the surf club was explicitly prohibited from using subwoofers. Still, residents report persistent disturbances.
“My specific hopes,” said one neighbor, “are that we don’t hear the wave machine at all or any outside function music.”
NBC Palm Springs’ Caitlin Kelly has more on the community’s concerns, and the surf club’s general manager shared his side of the story with Fred Rogan during last night’s broadcast. That interview will air shortly.
