Trump Administration Releases FBI’s Martin Luther King Jr. Surveillance Files

The Trump administration has released over 240,000 pages of long-sealed FBI files detailing the surveillance of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., marking the first time these records have been digitized and made publicly available.

According to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the documents were previously collecting dust in federal facilities for decades. Now accessible through the National Archives and Records Administration, the files include internal FBI memos, wiretap transcripts, surveillance reports, and documents related to the investigation into King's 1968 assassination.

While the release was anticipated to potentially include major revelations, historians reviewing the files say they have not found anything to significantly reshape the understanding of King’s life or legacy. Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer David Garrow said the materials provide procedural insights but are difficult to interpret without extensive knowledge of FBI document systems.

The King family, given advance access, strongly opposed the release. Bernice King and Martin Luther King III issued a joint statement urging the public to place the documents in historical context, warning that the FBI's surveillance campaign—spearheaded by J. Edgar Hoover—was meant to discredit and damage their father.

Not all family members agreed. King’s niece, Alveda King, a vocal conservative, praised the decision and thanked President Trump for “transparency.”

The FBI’s surveillance campaign against King included bugging hotel rooms, monitoring phone calls, and attempting to link him to Communist influences in an effort to undermine the Civil Rights Movement. Some documents in the collection repeat previously released allegations regarding King’s personal life and financial dealings.

The files were originally scheduled for release in 2027. However, an executive order signed by Trump earlier this year moved the date up, prompting questions about the timing—particularly as his administration faces scrutiny over its handling of Jeffrey Epstein-related documents.

Bernice King also weighed in on that issue, posting an image of her father with the caption: “Now, do the Epstein files.”
