Trump Finalizes Trade Deal with Philippines Amid Epstein File Controversy

President Donald Trump met with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the White House Tuesday to announce a new trade agreement — but ongoing questions surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein files continued to dominate headlines.

The trade meeting concluded with the announcement of a new 19% tariff rate on goods from the Philippines and the promise of freer trade access into the country. “He’s very tough on negotiating, but that’s okay — we’re working on it,” Trump said during his exchange with Marcos.

Still, the spotlight quickly shifted back to the Epstein controversy, as the Justice Department announced that Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche is set to interview Ghislaine Maxwell in the coming days. Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate, is currently serving time for her role in sex trafficking minors.

When pressed by reporters about the DOJ’s move, Trump brushed off the topic. “I don’t know anything about it,” he said. Asked whether he had concerns about his attorney’s involvement, he replied simply, “No concern.”

The House is also taking action. A committee plans to subpoena Maxwell, although it remains unclear what new information she could provide.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky) is leading a bipartisan push to release the full set of Epstein-related files. “People have wanted these files for years... and now we’re being told it’s a hoax? It just doesn’t wash,” Massie said. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-California) echoed the sentiment: “What we want is a full release of the files, regardless of who they impact.”

Despite the urgency, House Republicans are sending lawmakers home early for the August recess, delaying any vote on the matter until after the break.

Separately, two federal judges ordered the Justice Department to submit more detailed filings regarding the request to unseal Epstein-related grand jury transcripts. One judge has also requested input from Epstein’s victims and their representatives before proceeding with the unsealing process.
