Coachella Rail Station Could Transform Downtown with Jobs, Housing

The City of Coachella is moving forward with plans for a major rail station that could fundamentally transform the community's economic landscape, connecting residents to job opportunities in Los Angeles while spurring local development around the proposed Pueblo Viejo station site.

City officials will present the Coachella Rail Station Feasibility Study to the City Council tonight, outlining their preferred location for what would become a key stop on the Coachella Valley Rail (CV Rail) project - led by the Riverside County Transportation Commission to establish passenger rail service between Los Angeles and the Coachella Valley.

Station Location and Design

After evaluating multiple sites, the city has identified "Site 2 in Pueblo Viejo" as the preferred location for the rail station, situated in the downtown core near 4th Street and Grapefruit Boulevard. According to the study, this location was chosen because it offers "good accessibility, the most supportive land use, and the fewest engineering constraints."

The proposed station would feature modern amenities that community members have specifically requested through public workshops. "The top five preferred station features identified by residents are lighting, shaded waiting areas, security cameras, ramps, and seating areas," the study notes.

The station design aims to incorporate sustainability and includes plans for decorative elements that reflect the community's identity. As one community member noted in the study: "Something that shows what Coachella Valley is about. Very desert themed."

Economic Development Vision

The rail station is envisioned as a catalyst for broader downtown revitalization. Community input has shaped the development priorities around the station, with residents identifying their top preferences as:

  1. Coffee shops and boutiques

  2. Mixed-use residential and retail development

  3. Restaurants

  4. Open space

  5. Cultural and entertainment venues

"I like that this site is very central to downtown and can increase economic development and future growth," one resident commented during community workshops.

The study envisions creating "active blocks near the station" with vibrant street-level retail and dining options, while also planning for transit-oriented housing development that could provide affordable options for working families.

Cultural Identity and Community Input

City planners have emphasized incorporating the community's cultural heritage into the station design. The study highlights plans to "reflect the region's farmworker heritage and Latino cultural roots" and "honor local Indigenous communities through land acknowledgments."

Community workshops have been central to the planning process. "We need pedestrian crossings over or under tracks...need to connect to transit options like bus, rideshare or bicycle," residents emphasized, concerns that have been incorporated into the mobility framework.

The station would also feature "murals and public art by local artists" and "incorporate natural desert elements such as palm trees and date palms."

Transportation Connectivity

The rail connection would provide Coachella residents with direct access to job markets in Los Angeles County. The station is designed to integrate with local transportation, including bus connections and bicycle infrastructure.

The study includes plans for comprehensive pedestrian and cycling networks connecting the station to surrounding neighborhoods, addressing community concerns about connectivity across the railroad tracks.

Timeline and Next Steps

The feasibility study is currently in its summer 2025 phase, with the city hosting additional community workshops to refine the design concepts. The next steps include:

  • Preparing preliminary engineering plans and cost estimates

  • Developing detailed land use plans for the surrounding area

  • Creating economic development strategies

  • Finalizing the study by fall 2025

However, city officials emphasize that "this study does not commit the City to the approval or construction of any particular station location." The final selection will be determined through the formal environmental review process.

Regional Impact

For Coachella specifically, the rail station could serve as an anchor for downtown revitalization in a community that has historically faced economic challenges.

The project timeline extends through 2025 for the feasibility study, with construction and service dates yet to be determined pending completion of environmental reviews and funding approvals.

Community members interested in providing input can attend workshops or visit the project website to stay informed about developments. As the study notes, continued community engagement will be essential as the city refines its vision for this transformative infrastructure project.
