911 Outage Across Coachella Valley Sparks Concern After Departments Left in the Dark

Imagine needing emergency help and your 911 call doesn't go through. That’s exactly what happened early Wednesday morning across the Coachella Valley. Several police departments were left unaware for hours that their emergency lines had quietly gone offline.

The outage began around 2 a.m., but it wasn’t until 4 a.m. that dispatchers realized 911 calls weren’t getting through. Agencies including Cathedral City and Palm Springs Police confirmed their systems were also affected.

Initially, some feared copper wire vandalism — a problem local departments have faced in the past — but this time, the cause was different. Frontier Communications had conducted planned maintenance in the Santa Monica area, and the company failed to notify local dispatch centers that the work could impact 911 service.

Frontier has previously told officials that protecting copper infrastructure from theft is difficult. But police departments are pushing back, urging better safeguards and communication.

“This is the fourth or fifth time this year we've seen 911 service interruptions,” said one department representative. “Even if calls are rerouted to the California Highway Patrol, there’s still confusion and potential delay. Our residents don’t know what's happening — they just need help.”

Back in January, Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills voiced serious concerns over the recurring outages, even noting the city attorney was considering legal action against the service provider.

Fred Roggin will follow up with the Palm Springs Police Department tonight on The Roggin Report at 6:30 p.m., and NBC Palm Springs will have continuing coverage of this story tomorrow.
