City of Indio Unveils Strategic Plan Focused on Jobs, Downtown Growth, and Business Development

The City of Indio has rolled out a comprehensive strategic plan this week, highlighting six key priorities to guide its development through the year 2030.

A major focus of the five-year plan is boosting economic opportunity, especially by retaining local businesses and diversifying the city’s employment base. Officials hope to create a variety of jobs that encourage residents to both live and work in Indio, rather than commuting out of the city — a trend that currently affects about 80% of residents.

The strategy also includes efforts to promote entrepreneurship by partnering with Riverside County and College of the Desert. These partnerships aim to foster new small businesses and encourage innovation within the community.

On the downtown front, the city is working to transform the area into a true destination. Ongoing projects include new restaurants expected to open over the next 12 to 18 months and a new hotel currently under construction, expected to reshape the city skyline.

“We’re looking at where we can develop opportunities across the whole community,” officials said. “We want to grow employment locally, bring in large commercial projects, and continue enhancing what’s already underway downtown.”

The plan was shaped through extensive community engagement, including forums, surveys, and interviews with thousands of Indio residents.
