Convicted Felon Impersonates Officer in Hemet; Indio PD Warns Public on How to Spot Fakes

A convicted felon posing as a law enforcement officer was arrested Monday afternoon in Hemet, raising serious concerns about how easily police identities can be faked. In response, the Indio Police Department has released a public safety video on social media detailing what their real officers wear and drive — and how to tell the difference. The suspect, who identified himself as "Marshal Goodnight," now faces multiple charges including impersonating an officer. His realistic-looking uniform, vehicle, and badge were convincing enough to alarm local residents and law enforcement alike.

“It did look like a police car. It did look like a real uniform. It did look like a real badge,” one concerned resident told NBC Palm Springs. “That’s what’s scary — you think you’re dealing with real law enforcement.”

Indio PD's Sergeant Abraham Plata explained that while uniforms and even body cameras can be purchased by anyone, there are still subtle yet crucial details that set genuine officers apart.

“Yes, they can be replicated,” Plata admitted. “However, we do have designated uniform companies who embroider our patches, which only we possess. Most officers carry a department-issued badge with their ID number. That’s much harder to duplicate.”

Sergeant Plata also acknowledged that vehicles can be mimicked to resemble police units, but officers and dispatch are trained to recognize their own. “We know our city and our personnel. If something doesn’t look right, we’ll investigate it immediately.”

The situation has left many in the community uneasy, especially considering the ease with which a convicted felon carried out the impersonation. For those who may find themselves in a questionable situation, Plata encourages trusting your instincts. “If you have a gut feeling that something’s off, be a good neighbor and report it,” he said.

The Indio Police Department is urging the public to stay vigilant, know the signs of legitimate law enforcement, and never hesitate to report suspicious activity. For more information tune into NBC Palm Springs.
