Palm Springs Launches Blue Zones Cleanup Days to Promote Healthier Living

The City of Palm Springs is taking another step toward becoming an official Blue Zone community by hosting a series of tobacco waste cleanup events at local parks—beginning with DeMuth Park on Saturday, August 2.

The cleanup days are part of a broader effort to qualify Palm Springs as a Blue Zone—a designation given to regions where people live longer, healthier lives. The initiative is inspired by the work of Dan Buettner, who identified communities around the world with high longevity and quality of life. Buettner recently spoke with NBC Palm Springs' Fred Rogan about the key to creating such environments.

“To make this work, the public sector—including mayors, school superintendents, and city councils—must commit to making the entire community healthier,” Buettner explained. “We also work with restaurants, grocery stores, workplaces, and faith-based organizations to create policies and designs that make the healthy choice the easy choice.”

The August 2 cleanup at DeMuth Park is the first of several community events planned as part of this transformation. Residents are encouraged to participate and help keep public spaces clean while supporting the city’s mission to improve well-being.
