SoCal Edison Offers Wildfire Recovery Program for Eaton Fire Victims

Southern California Edison has announced a new program aimed at helping families and businesses recover from the devastating Eaton Fire. The Wildfire Recovery Compensation Program is expected to launch this fall and is being promoted as a streamlined alternative to a potentially lengthy and costly litigation process.

The utility says the program is voluntary and will offer eligible individuals and businesses an expedited path to recovery, potentially avoiding the 12- to 18-month investigations that often accompany wildfire lawsuits.

However, attorneys representing fire victims are urging caution. The LA Fire Justice coalition, which represents many of those who have filed lawsuits against SoCal Edison, questions the timing and motivation behind the compensation offer.

“I guess the question is, why would you be compensating people if you weren’t responsible for the fire?” one attorney noted.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Surveillance footage reportedly showed a spark from a transmission line in Eaton Canyon the night the fire began. Investigators have removed SoCal Edison towers from Altadena to a facility in Irwindale for further analysis.

Attorney Douglas Boxer, with experience in similar wildfire claims against PG&E, says direct pay programs often require participants to waive their right to future legal action — a concern when the full extent of fire-related damages may not yet be known.

“It’s very hard to ask one of my clients to sign a release for something today when we don’t really know the full extent of the damages,” Boxer said.

The details of SoCal Edison’s program have not yet been made public, but fire victims are encouraged to carefully review any offers before waiving their legal rights.
