Shady Fire erupts in Coachella Valley, prompting evacuations and threatening homes
We begin tonight with breaking news as a vegetation fire burns out of control in the eastern Coachella Valley. The blaze, now being called the Shady Fire, has prompted evacuation orders and is producing thick smoke that’s affecting air quality in the area.
These are live pictures from near Avenue 54 and Cesar Chavez, where the fire broke out just before 3 p.m. Friday. Dark, billowing smoke is rising into the sky as firefighters from multiple agencies, including Cal Fire, Cathedral City Fire, and Palm Springs Fire, battle the flames.
Officials confirm the fire has burned at least 30 acres so far and is moving at a slow rate of speed. Multiple date palm trees are on fire, and structures on the south end of the blaze are threatened. A water-dropping helicopter has been called in to assist, and crews continue to work to protect homes and nearby properties.
Evacuation orders are currently in effect, and residents are urged to leave the area immediately. Drivers on the I-10 freeway reported slowing down to watch the smoke earlier this evening, and officials are reminding motorists to use caution on the roads.
At one point, a horse was seen running loose from a property to escape the flames, but neighbors were able to safely return the animal.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Officials say more information, including updated acreage and evacuation zones, will be released as it becomes available.
