Federal Judge Dismisses DOJ Lawsuit Against Chicago's Sanctuary City Policies

A federal judge has dismissed a Department of Justice lawsuit against Chicago over its sanctuary city policies. The Department of Justice also sued Cook County and Illinois.

The lawsuit alleged that local law enforcement agencies blocked federal immigration law by refusing to participate in enforcement or share the status of criminals.

In her dismissal, the U.S. District Court judge said the federal government cannot legally force states to carry out a federal regulatory program.

The case was dismissed without prejudice, which means it can be appealed or refiled ahead of an August 22nd deadline.
