Shady Fire 40% Contained as Evacuation Orders Remain in Effect

A vegetation fire that broke out Friday afternoon near Thermal continues to burn, with evacuation orders still in place for residents in the affected area.

The Shady Fire started north of Thermal at the intersection of Shady Lane and Avenue 54. As of the most recent update, fire officials report the blaze is approximately 40 percent contained.

Current evacuation orders cover the area north of Avenue 55, south of Avenue 54, east of Harrison Street, and west of Shady Lane. Evacuation warnings that were issued yesterday have since been lifted.

Residents who have been displaced can seek shelter at Desert Mirage High School in Thermal. Pet owners can bring animals to the temporary shelter established at 72050 Pet Land Place in Thousand Palms.

More than 100 personnel are responding to the fire, including crews from Cal Fire, Riverside County Sheriff's Department, and fire departments from Palm Springs and Cathedral City.

No injuries have been reported. Fire officials have not yet released a damage assessment, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
