Julia Garner Confirms Madonna Biopic Still Moving Forward
Actress Julia Garner has given fans an update on the much-anticipated Madonna biopic, confirming that the project remains in development.
Garner, best known for her role in “Ozark” and currently starring in “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” appeared on the “SmartLess” podcast Monday, where she told hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes that the biopic is “supposed to still happen.”
Originally announced in 2022, the film has been delayed, largely due to Madonna’s focus on her Celebration Tour in 2023. The pop legend is expected to direct the movie, which she co-wrote, according to Variety.
Garner described an intense audition process that included hours of dancing and even singing in front of Madonna herself. Other actresses who reportedly competed for the role included Alexa Demie, Florence Pugh, and Anne Winters.
“I kind of just thought, okay, what would Madonna do?” Garner said, adding that she approached her audition with confidence. “Convince you that she deserved to be in this room. And I was kind of like, you can take it or leave it. But if you leave it, then that’s on you. And if you take it, great. That kind of mentality. And work the room, literally work the room.”
Garner also shared that she grew up listening to Madonna and drew inspiration from that experience while preparing for the role.
The film, which will chronicle the life and career of the Queen of Pop, does not yet have a release date.
