Know Before You Go: Major La Quinta Road Work
Coachella Valley drivers should prepare for significant traffic disruptions this week as major construction projects continue across the region, particularly in La Quinta where a full intersection closure is planned.
La Quinta Highway 111 Project Causes Major Closure
The most significant impact this week will be the complete closure of the Washington Street and Highway 111 intersection in La Quinta. The closure begins Wednesday, July 30th at 5 a.m. and will reopen Thursday, July 31st at 5 a.m.
"This is a full closure. You won't be able to sneak through there," warned Kris Gunterson, Program Manager for CVAG's CV Sync Traffic Management Center.
The Highway 111 pavement project spans from Plaza La Quinta to Jefferson Street. Through Wednesday, eastbound left-turn lanes onto northbound Washington will remain closed while crews complete paving work.
Recommended Detour Routes
For drivers coming from the Cove area:
Primary routes: Adams Street and Dune Palms Road
Alternative routes: Fred Waring Drive and Miles Avenue
For freeway travelers:
Recommended: Jefferson Street as the primary alternate
Traffic signal timing will be adjusted along detour routes to accommodate increased traffic volume.
Indian Wells Construction Adds Complexity
Concurrent construction in Indian Wells will create additional challenges, particularly as some work overlaps with La Quinta detour routes. Projects include:
Installation of a right-hand turn lane near the church on Washington Street
Curb radius modifications at Miles Avenue and Washington Street
Paving work on the Miles Avenue section
The overlapping construction zones may create compounding delays, especially since Miles Avenue serves as part of the recommended detour system for the La Quinta project.
Stay Informed
Drivers can sign up for real-time project alerts and access detailed detour maps through CVAG's website. The alerts provide current project status and any schedule changes as work progresses from west to east along the corridor.
Both projects are expected to continue for the next month or two, making advance planning essential for regular commuters through these areas.
