Philanthropist Wallis Annenberg has died at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of generosity that has shaped cultural, environmental, and educational institutions across Southern California and the Coachella Valley.

As president and CEO of the Annenberg Foundation, Wallace Annenberg oversaw approximately $1.5 billion in grants supporting organizations in arts, science, education, healthcare, animal welfare, and environmental conservation. Her vision helped establish institutions such as the Wallace Annenberg Gen Space in Los Angeles and the Wallis Annenberg Building at the California Science Center.

Locally, her contributions included support for Eisenhower Health, the McCallum Theatre, the Palm Springs Art Museum, and the transformation of the Annenberg family’s Rancho Mirage estate into Sunnylands Center and Gardens, which remains a landmark for history, culture, and diplomacy.

Her most recent endeavor was the Wallis-Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, a groundbreaking structure being built over the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills to provide safe passage for wildlife. Construction on the final phase began in June, with completion expected in 2026.

In a statement released Monday night, the Palm Springs Art Museum paid tribute to her impact, saying, “Her commitment to cultural institutions and the public shaped communities across the country, including the Coachella Valley. The Annenberg family has played a critical role in the growth and success of the Palm Springs Art Museum for nearly five decades.”
