President Trump Announces 15% Tariff Trade Deal with European Union

President Trump has announced a new trade agreement with the European Union, setting tariffs at 15% on most European goods entering the United States. The deal, reached at the president’s private club in Scotland, comes after months of tense negotiations and tariff threats.

The agreement is designed to bring stability to trade relations with one of America’s largest economic partners. European Commission leaders say while the 15% rate is still significant, it is far less than the 30% tariffs the president had previously threatened. The pact also includes important exceptions, with no tariffs on aircraft parts, certain generic drugs, and some agricultural products. However, tariffs will apply to European-made cars.

Under the deal, the European Union will not impose new tariffs on U.S. goods. Instead, EU nations have agreed to purchase $750 billion worth of American energy and invest an additional $600 billion into the United States. They will also commit to buying a significant amount of U.S. military equipment.

The timing is key, as an August 1 deadline was approaching for countries that had not reached agreements with the U.S., which would have triggered higher tariffs and added costs for American businesses.

President Trump is scheduled to meet later this morning with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss additional trade and economic issues.
