Riverside County Supervisor Proposes Oversight Committee for Sheriff’s Department Amid Misconduct Allegations

Riverside County Supervisor Jose Medina is expected to introduce a motion Tuesday calling for the creation of an oversight committee for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. The proposal comes as the county faces increasing scrutiny over allegations of misconduct and numerous lawsuits involving the department.

Currently, more than a dozen civil lawsuits have been filed by families who claim that misconduct inside county jails contributed to the deaths of their loved ones. These cases have intensified calls for accountability and reform.

Sheriff Chad Bianco, speaking ahead of the Board of Supervisors meeting, voiced strong opposition to the proposed committee. “They are funded by the far left. They are pro-criminal. They are anti-law enforcement,” Bianco said. “That’s all these organizations are. Every single one of them, that is what they are. That is why we are here, because they are trying to destroy an independent law enforcement because they want law enforcement to do exactly what they want in politics.”

The motion will be discussed during Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, where members will consider whether an independent body should be created to review policies, complaints, and practices within the Sheriff’s Department.

The debate highlights a growing divide over how to balance public trust and transparency with the operational independence of law enforcement in Riverside County.
