Senator Alex Padilla Pushes New Bill for Undocumented Immigrants to Gain Legal Residency

A new push in Washington could bring hope to millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United States. Senator Alex Padilla has introduced legislation that aims to create a pathway to legal permanent residency for those who have been living in the country for years without status.

The proposal would update the 1929 Immigration Act, granting the Secretary of Homeland Security discretionary authority to register undocumented individuals for permanent residency. To qualify, applicants would need to show they have been in the United States for at least seven years prior to the law taking effect, have no criminal record, and pay their taxes.

For students like Roberto at College of the Desert, the bill represents an opportunity to contribute openly to the country they consider home. “I want to contribute, I want to help as much as I can,” he said, expressing hope that lawmakers recognize the value immigrants bring.

The Foundation for the Economic Development of the United States estimates that, if passed, the legislation could result in contributions of roughly $121 million annually to the U.S. economy, with $35 million in taxes generated by newly legalized residents.

Senator Padilla has gained support from several Democratic senators, though it remains uncertain whether the measure will receive enough backing in Congress. His previous effort, the Citizenship Act, did not advance due to lack of support.

The proposed bill could affect more than eight million people, including DACA recipients, TPS holders, and others who have lived in the country for many years.
