Five Cathedral City Firefighters Sue City Alleging Retaliation and Harassment

Five Cathedral City firefighters have filed a lawsuit against the city, alleging retaliation and harassment in the workplace.

According to a report by the Desert Sun, the firefighters claim that Fire Chief Michael Contreras created a hostile work environment by insulting, intimidating, and belittling employees.

Chief Contreras, responding to the allegations, told the Desert Sun that the issue stems from “some employees [who] have not reacted well to change and accountability.”

City Manager Charlie McClendon voiced his support for Chief Contreras, stating that he continues to believe in the chief’s leadership while the city investigates the allegations.

Fred Roggin spoke with the attorney representing the firefighters, who said, “In this case, what we’re seeing is unlawful retaliation and abuse toward the employees, where the employees have stood up for their rights on many occasions by voicing concern about unlawful and retaliatory conduct and abusive conduct, and each time they have, the conduct escalated, which is what makes it unlawful.”

NBC Palm Springs also reached out to city officials, who confirmed that the matter is under investigation.
