Riverside County Board Considers Oversight Committee for Sheriff’s Department Amid Misconduct Allegations

This morning, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors is set to discuss a proposal that could create an oversight committee for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The motion, introduced by First District Supervisor Jose Medina, comes as the county faces mounting scrutiny and civil lawsuits tied to allegations of misconduct in county jails. Families of inmates who died in custody have filed more than a dozen lawsuits, alleging failures that contributed to those deaths.

Sheriff Chad Bianco voiced his opposition ahead of the meeting, saying, “They are funded by the far left. They are pro-criminal. They are anti-law enforcement. That’s all these organizations are, every single one of them. That is why we are here, because they are trying to destroy an independent law enforcement because they want law enforcement to do exactly what they want in politics.”

The debate has drawn responses from multiple groups. The Democrats of the Desert posted on social media, stating, “Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco’s pattern of egregious failures, lack of transparency, and abuse of power has gone unchecked for too long. The time for oversight is now, and we cannot afford further silence or inaction.”

Meanwhile, the Republican Party of Riverside County also responded online, calling Medina’s proposal “politically motivated and unnecessary,” adding that it could undermine law enforcement authority.

NBC Palm Springs reporter Antonio Marquez is at today’s meeting and will provide updates on the board’s decision during the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts.
