Desert Hot Springs High Launches First-Ever Home Visit Program to Support Students Ahead of School Year

With the new school year just around the corner, Desert Hot Springs High School is pioneering a unique initiative to support students and families in their transition back to the classroom. For the first time, the school is offering in-home visits led by Principal Omar Tinoco and Family and Community Engagement Specialist Teresita Perez. The goal: to reduce back-to-school stress and help students feel seen, supported, and ready to learn.

Each visit lasts around 10 to 15 minutes and gives school leaders a chance to check in with students and their families about any concerns, whether academic, emotional, or logistical. The visits are optional and scheduled upon request—perfect for parents who may feel overwhelmed or for students who are nervous about facing new teachers or environments.

According to school officials, these visits are about more than handing out supplies. They're about reminding families that the school is a second home, and that educators are partners in student success. “A lot of times, kids feel like they can’t talk to adults,” said Principal Tinoco. “We’re working to change that.”

While they’re able to conduct more than ten visits a day, school staff stress that space is limited. Families interested in scheduling a visit are encouraged to call the school soon before the program fills up.
