Palm Springs Animal Shelter Suspends Cat Intake Due to Illness Outbreak
The Palm Springs Animal Shelter announced Wednesday that it has temporarily suspended intake of cats and kittens due to a viral illness outbreak at the facility.
The two-week suspension runs from July 31 through August 13 while shelter staff work to contain the spread of the virus. Shelter officials said overcrowding increases the likelihood and severity of disease outbreaks in animal facilities.
During the suspension period, residents who find stray cats or kittens in Palm Springs are advised to contact the shelter's admissions team, who will provide alternative placement options.
The shelter is encouraging the public to help reduce future overcrowding by spaying and neutering pets, exploring alternatives to surrendering animals, and adopting shelter animals.
The facility expects to resume normal cat and kitten intake operations after August 13, pending successful containment of the outbreak.
