Palm Springs Universal Basic Income Pilot Program Shows Life-Changing Results

A bold experiment in Palm Springs is reshaping lives for a group of residents struggling to make ends meet. Through a universal basic income pilot program, 14 participants received $800 a month with no strings attached.

The program, administered in part by DAP Health, was designed to provide stability to residents living on less than $1,000 a month, often with mounting debt and insecure housing. After early challenges, DAP Health stepped in during July 2024 to ensure payments continued and to oversee the program’s long-term success.

C.J. Tobe, Chief Transformation Officer at DAP Health, says the program proved that consistent financial support can be transformative. “We stepped in to make sure that these participants continue to receive their $800 of monthly stipend. More importantly, the project shows that universal basic income is an effective model to help people gain financial sustainability,” Tobe said.

Participants describe the impact as life-changing. One recipient explained that before the program they earned around $400 to $500 a month and faced homelessness. “The UBI money, it meant the world to me,” they said.

Results from the pilot showed improvements in housing stability, mental health, motivation to continue education, and overall well-being. Tobe emphasized that removing the stress of daily survival allowed participants to plan for their futures.

For DAP Health, the effort was more than financial support. It was a commitment to accountability and partnership, ensuring that vulnerable residents receive the resources they need to build stable, healthy lives.

As discussions about poverty and equity continue nationwide, Palm Springs’ pilot provides evidence that guaranteed income can be a powerful tool for communities.
