Over 3,000 Boeing Workers Strike Over Contract Dispute

More than 3,000 Boeing employees have gone on strike, halting work on the company’s fighter jets in the St. Louis area and parts of Illinois. The walkout began after union members rejected Boeing’s latest four-year contract offer on Sunday.

These workers are part of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 837. Their leadership says Boeing’s offer failed to meet members' expectations, despite containing significant wage increases and bonuses.

According to Boeing Defense, the proposal included an average wage hike of approximately 40%, a 20% general wage increase, a $5,000 ratification bonus, enhanced periodic raises, and improved vacation and sick leave benefits.

Still, union head Tom Bolling said in a statement, “Our members deserve a contract that reflects their skill, dedication and the critical role they play in our nation's defense. Boeing’s last, best, and final offer didn’t meet the membership’s expectations.”

Boeing says it has contingency plans in place, including the use of non-union labor, to maintain production.

CEO Kelly Ortberg appeared unfazed when speaking with analysts about the company’s second-quarter earnings last week, referencing the company’s ability to endure a seven-week strike last year by 33,000 IAM District 751 members in the Pacific Northwest.

The strike underscores continued labor unrest in the aerospace sector, with workers pushing for more substantial compensation packages amid rising living costs and increased demands on the job.
