Rosa Fire Grows to 1,600+ Acres With 5% Containment; Highway 74 Remains Closed; Residents Stay Behind Defending Homes

We have team coverage tonight on the Rosa Fire, the top story across the Coachella Valley as the blaze continues to threaten mountain communities and stretch emergency resources.

The wildfire erupted around 12:30 PM yesterday near the Santa Rosa Truck Trail. As of this evening, Cal Fire reports the Rosa Fire has grown to approximately 1,200 acres and is only 5% contained. Over 300 fire personnel are actively working the front lines.

Highway 74 is currently closed in both directions between Ribbonwood and Cahuilla Way. According to Caltrans and CHP, the closure will remain in effect until at least tomorrow due to hazardous fire activity and smoke. Two evacuation centers have been opened, including one at the Palm Desert Community Center. Evacuation orders are in place for several areas, including Ribbonwood and Pinyon Pines.

Despite the danger, some residents are choosing to remain behind. NBC Palm Springs spoke with a local man from Pinyon Pines who shared why he’s staying.

“A lot of us out here, we don’t have fire insurance,” he explained. “A few weeks ago there was a fire nearby, and I was one of the first people on scene. There was only one engine, and the extra hands made a difference. That’s the same reason some of us are staying now — to protect our homes, help the elderly, and take care of the animals.”

Several residents off-camera echoed that sentiment, telling NBC Palm Springs they feel a personal responsibility to protect their community during these difficult moments.

Meanwhile, Cal Fire says the exact cause of the Rosa Fire is still under investigation. No official word yet on when full containment is expected.

We’ll continue to monitor this developing story and bring updates throughout the evening. For now, residents are urged to stay informed through official channels, obey evacuation orders, and avoid closed roadways.
