US Imports Fall Sharply in June as Higher Tariffs Take Effect

American businesses imported significantly less in June, marking the first full month that higher tariffs were in effect, according to new Census Bureau data.

Imports declined by $12.6 billion in June, with consumer goods accounting for the largest drop at $8.4 billion. The decrease follows the implementation of increased tariffs that made foreign-made goods more expensive for US importers.

The import decline also reflects a shift in business behavior after months of companies stockpiling foreign goods in anticipation of the tariff increases. Many businesses front-loaded their purchases earlier in the year to avoid the higher costs.

US exports also fell in June, dropping by more than $1 billion despite few trading partners imposing new retaliatory tariffs on American goods during the month.

The combined effect of reduced imports and exports led to a 16% decrease in the US trade deficit from the previous month. The trade deficit measures the difference between the value of goods and services a country exports versus what it imports.
