Historic Indio Restaurant Burger Box Reopens Under New Ownership

Indio staple Burger Box will reopen Monday under new ownership following its closure late last year.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place Monday, August 11 at 9 a.m., hosted by the City of Indio and Indio Business Connect at the restaurant's location on 81201 Indio Blvd.

Originally founded in 1945 by George Mitchell as a combination diner and gas station, Burger Box operated under the Mitchell family for decades after the founder's death. The restaurant had maintained its presence in the community for nearly eight decades before closing late last year.

"Burger Box has long been more than a restaurant as it quickly became a landmark for locals and travelers alike," said Mayor Glenn Miller.

It is now operated by Yolanda Ruiz and her family. Ruiz worked at Burger Box for 24 years before acquiring the business from the previous owners. The Ruiz family will manage daily operations at the reopened location.
