Trump Administration to Reinstall Confederate Statues in DC and Virginia

The Trump administration is moving forward with plans to reinstall two Confederate monuments, following through on President Donald Trump’s efforts to restore statues removed in the wake of nationwide protests against racial injustice.

The US National Park Service announced Monday it will reinstall a statue of Confederate officer Albert Pike in Washington, DC, torn down by protesters in 2020. The statue was originally erected by the Freemasons in 1901. It honors Pike, a controversial figure with ties to the Confederacy, journalism, Freemasonry, and disputed allegations involving the Ku Klux Klan.

In a separate announcement, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Arlington National Cemetery will reintroduce Moses Ezekiel’s “Reconciliation Monument,” a Confederate memorial originally unveiled in 1914. The sculpture, which depicts a sanitized portrayal of slavery, will be returned near the grave of its creator after undergoing restoration. The Army expects to complete the project by 2027.

Hegseth criticized the removal of the statue during the Biden administration, calling it the work of “woke lemmings.” He has also led efforts to reverse name changes at military bases that once honored Confederate leaders — a move that would require congressional approval.

The reinstatement of these statues aligns with Trump’s “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History” executive order, which directs federal agencies to undo what the White House claims are distortions of American history. The order also created a task force to restore damaged or removed federal monuments.

While supporters of the move argue it preserves American heritage, critics say it glorifies a racist past. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton of Washington, DC, called the Pike statue’s return “morally objectionable” and announced plans to reintroduce a bill to remove it permanently.

Both statues have long stirred debate over their symbolism and historical significance. Opponents argue these monuments represent the Confederacy’s defense of slavery, while others view them as part of American history worth preserving.
