Talking with Thalia, Coffee Talk: Compassion & Canines

Over coffee in Rancho Mirage, we sat down with Carlynne McDonnell — longtime Greater Palm Springs resident and founder of Barkee LaRoux's House of Love, a senior dog sanctuary and hospice. Carlynne shared the heartbreaking reality many animals face in our valley, especially older pets abandoned in shelters after their owners pass away or can no longer care for them. With dogs as old as 19 in her care, Carlynne and her team step in at the hardest time — offering comfort, love, and dignity to animals in their final years.

She also addressed the urgent need for unity and action in the ongoing battle over the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, calling on the county supervisor and all sides to prioritize what really matters: the animals.
