3 Simple Ways to Ease Back-to-School Anxiety
It’s not unusual for kids — and even teens — to feel a mix of emotions heading into a new school year. For some, it’s excitement. For others, it’s worry about the unknown.
Experts say parents can play a big role in helping kids feel more confident and prepared.
Tip #1: Talk It Out
Encourage open conversations. Ask your child what they’re excited about — and what they might be nervous about. Just knowing they can share their feelings without judgment can ease a lot of stress.
Tip #2: Build a Routine
Start easing back into the school schedule a week or two in advance. That includes consistent bedtimes, earlier wake-up times, and organizing school supplies. A predictable routine can make the transition smoother.
Tip #3: Visit the School
If possible, attend open houses or walk through the school before the first day. Familiarizing your child with their classroom, lockers, or bus route can help reduce first-day jitters.
While some back-to-school nerves are normal, if your child’s anxiety seems extreme or persistent, experts recommend checking in with a school counselor or mental health professional.
With a little preparation and support, most kids will adjust quickly and start the year off strong.
