Indio Police Launch New Safety Measures to Curb Rising Car Crashes

Authorities in Indio are stepping up efforts to reduce the growing number of car accidents across the city.

Police say high speeds and distracted driving are the leading causes of recent crashes, some resulting in significant property damage and at least one fatal collision in recent months.

“One thing we’re noticing is that congestion on the freeway is often made worse by collisions,” an Indio Police Department spokesperson explained. “When drivers slow down to look at an accident, it affects traffic flow for everyone.”

Officers are urging drivers to take simple steps to stay safe — including leaving earlier to avoid rushing, watching speed limits closely, putting cell phones away, lowering radio volume, and staying alert to their surroundings. They say listening as well as watching for potential hazards is especially important on freeways.

The City of Indio is also implementing a visual safety improvement by adding yellow backplates to select traffic lights. These make stoplights more visible and alert drivers that they are approaching intersections where accidents occur more frequently.

“If you see a stoplight with yellow around it, that means it’s a location with a history of collisions,” police said, adding that the goal is to make drivers more cautious in high-risk areas.

Officials hope these changes, combined with safer driving habits, will reduce crashes and improve overall road safety for the community.
