Waterslide on World’s Largest Cruise Ship Cracks Open, Injuring Passenger

An acrylic waterslide aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas cracked open Thursday, injuring one passenger and leaving a large hole in the slide’s structure.

According to Royal Caribbean, medical care was provided to an adult guest after part of the slide’s acrylic glass broke as the guest passed through. The passenger is in stable condition.

The damaged slide, part of the ship’s Category 6 waterpark, will remain closed for the rest of the sailing while an investigation is conducted. Video taken after the incident shows water pouring out of a hole in the colorful tubular slide as it passes over the ship’s deck.

Category 6, which Royal Caribbean describes as the “largest waterpark at sea,” spans decks 16 and 17 of the ship and features six waterslides. Icon of the Seas, which embarked on its maiden voyage in January 2024, is the largest cruise ship currently in operation and can carry nearly 10,000 passengers and crew at full capacity.
