Trump Relocates Obama and Bush Presidential Portraits to Restricted White House Stairwell

The White House’s Grand Foyer is known for displaying the official portraits of America’s most recent presidents — a tradition honoring their service and offering visitors a glimpse of history. But this week, that tradition took a sharp turn.

President Donald Trump has ordered the relocation of the portraits of former President Barack Obama, former President George W. Bush, and former President George H. W. Bush to a secluded spot at the top of the Grand Staircase — an area inaccessible to the public. Sources tell CNN that Trump personally directed the move, placing the paintings out of view for the thousands who tour the White House each day.

A photograph obtained by CNN shows Obama’s portrait hanging in a corner landing near the private residence, a space typically seen only by the first family, Secret Service agents, and select staff. The shift comes after an earlier change in April, when the Obama portrait was moved across the Grand Foyer and replaced with a painting depicting Trump surviving an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Presidential portrait protocol calls for recent leaders’ paintings to hold the most prominent positions in the White House entrance, visible during official events and public tours. A portrait of President Joe Biden has yet to be completed.

This latest move underscores strained relations between Trump and his predecessors. Trump has accused Obama and his administration of “treason” over the 2016 election, prompting a rare and sharply worded rebuttal from Obama’s office. His ties with the Bush family have also been frosty, with both Bush presidents critical of his leadership.

Historically, the tradition of formal presidential portraits was cemented in the early 1960s under First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, with portraits funded by the nonprofit White House Historical Association. Unveiling ceremonies have typically been moments of bipartisan goodwill — a stark contrast to the current tensions surrounding the paintings’ placement.
