Federal Judge Denies Request to Unseal Maxwell Grand Jury Materials
A federal judge on Monday rejected the Department of Justice's request to unseal grand jury materials from Ghislaine Maxwell's criminal case, ruling that the government failed to meet the legal threshold for disclosure.
U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer said the DOJ's reasoning for unsealing the materials was insufficient and that anyone who followed the Jeffrey Epstein case would "learn next to nothing new" from the documents.
The ruling comes after supporters of President Donald Trump had advocated for greater transparency regarding materials related to Maxwell and her co-conspirator Jeffrey Epstein, the deceased financier who was accused of sex trafficking.
In his decision, Judge Engelmayer noted that the grand jury materials do not identify any individuals other than Epstein and Maxwell as having engaged in sexual contact with minors.
Grand jury proceedings are typically kept secret under federal law, with limited exceptions allowing for disclosure in specific circumstances deemed to serve the public interest.
