Metal Detectorists in Southern New England Reunite Lost Treasures with Owners

Friends Gary Bonin of Westerly, Rhode Island, and Wayne Aguiar of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, are spending their summer on a mission — but it doesn’t involve beach chairs or umbrellas. Instead, their gear includes an array of metal detectors, five of which Bonin keeps in his car at any given time.

The two best friends are dedicated metal detectorists, scouring the sands of southern New England to help strangers recover lost items. They work across Connecticut, Rhode Island, and even Massachusetts, offering their services to anyone in need.

Occasionally, people approach them on the beach after losing a valuable, and the duo springs into action. Over the years, they’ve recovered more than 150 pieces of jewelry, from diamond rings to wedding bands. While many might see such finds as an opportunity for profit, Bonin and Aguiar say the sentimental value is far more important.

“The intention is to try to find things to return it to people,” Aguiar explained, noting they hope to fight the “finders keepers” mentality and restore faith in humanity. When they find an item without a clear owner, they post photos online asking for identifying details before returning it.

The joy they bring to people is immeasurable, from emotional hugs to tears of gratitude. “You can’t put into words that feeling,” Bonin said. “That’s priceless.”

Through their efforts, these “detector collectors” have turned a unique hobby into a heartfelt mission — proving some treasures are worth far more than gold.
