Nonprofit Protects Coachella Valley Farm Workers Amid Excessive Heat Warnings

As temperatures continue to soar and excessive heat warnings remain in effect, farm workers in the Coachella Valley face daily health risks working long hours under the scorching sun. For many, avoiding the heat is simply not an option. That’s where a local nonprofit is stepping in to help. TODEC Legal Center, based in the Coachella Valley, is working on the frontlines to support farm workers through its “Harvesting Prevention” program. The initiative involves teams visiting agricultural fields to provide vital items such as bottled water, wide-brimmed hats, and heat-protective clothing — all aimed at shielding workers from dangerous sun exposure.

“We always like to remind farm workers and anybody working outside to get as much shade as possible, stay cool, and look for signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion,” said one TODEC official. “Education is key to prevention.”

Beyond physical resources, TODEC is also deeply focused on raising awareness. The organization hosts focus groups to teach community members how to identify symptoms of heat-related illnesses and how to act quickly in case of emergencies. Their efforts go further by ensuring workers understand their legal rights, such as access to water, rest breaks, and protective equipment.

"Making sure their workplaces also provide those resources is essential,” added the official.

With many agricultural workers lacking access to formal protections or adequate working conditions, TODEC’s role has become even more critical during this heatwave.

In addition to in-field support, TODEC provides online resources and legal information through its website, helping empower workers beyond the reach of their on-site programs.
