An Oklahoma boy with a big heart has given thousands of children a reason to smile. Eight-year-old Elliott Johnston of Broken Arrow celebrated his birthday this year by delivering 7,092 new toys to Oklahoma Children’s Hospital – OU Health, surpassing his goal of 6,500.

Elliott, who was born with a complex congenital heart defect, has undergone eight heart surgeries, strokes, and life support. Despite these challenges, he’s been holding the Hearts for Elliott Toy Drive each year to give back to the hospital where he has spent more than a year of his life.

“This is really a celebration of Elliott’s life,” said his mother, Mariah Johnston. “They’ve always been so generous with him while he’s here, giving him toys to lift his spirits. This is our way of giving back.”

With help from more than a dozen volunteers, Elliott and his family used a U-Haul “sleigh” to make the special delivery on August 11. The toys will stock the hospital’s Toy Cart program, which ensures every admitted child can pick a toy to keep during their stay.

Over the past eight years, the Hearts for Elliott Toy Drive has collected nearly 30,000 toys for young patients. Erin Bailey, Director of Life, Integrative and Creative Care at the hospital, said the impact is profound: “Just one toy, much less 7,092, makes a difference in so many kids’ lives here.”

The hospital recently surprised Elliott with a birthday party in its child life zone. “Every year is truly a year we didn’t think he would have,” said Mariah. “It’s amazing to celebrate in such a big way.”

For Elliott, it’s all about helping others. “It makes me feel like I’m helping a lot of kids,” he said.
