Palm Springs Animal Shelter Hosts Free Adoptions for Annual Clear the Shelters Event

The Palm Springs Animal Shelter is joining the nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign this weekend, August 16 and 17, with all adoption fees covered thanks to generous donations from the local community.

The event, part of NBC’s annual Clear the Shelters initiative, aims to connect pets with loving homes at no cost to adopters. With the shelter currently operating at 250–300% over capacity, staff say the timing could not be more critical.

“This event is a godsend for us because the summer months are typically when animal shelters are the most crowded,” said Jack Hagerman, Associate Director of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. “We see the most number of strays coming in this time of year, and this event really helps us help more animals in the community.”

Among the many adoptable pets are dogs like Pris, a playful five-year-old who loves fetch; Tank, a friendly stray who arrived in May; Papa—nicknamed “Potato”—a one-and-a-half-year-old good with kids; Cisco, a mellow four-year-old; and Chavo, a sweet, people-loving husky. Staff also note there are several purebred dogs available, including pugs, bulldogs, and huskies.

The adoption event runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Organizers recommend arriving early, as last year’s event saw long lines forming before doors opened.
