Palm Springs Police Department Transitions K-9 Units as Veteran Dog Retires

The Palm Springs Police Department underwent a significant transition in its K-9 unit this week, marking both the end of one dog's career and the beginning of another's service.

K-9 Hylas officially retired Monday after five years with the department, where he served alongside his handler, Sergeant Etchson, who was recently promoted. Throughout his career, Hylas specialized in narcotics detection and assisted in operations that removed substantial quantities of drugs from the community. The retired police dog will spend his remaining years as a ranch dog.

Simultaneously, the department welcomed K-9 Zita, who has been paired with Officer Sandoval. Zita focuses on the detection of explosives, firearms, and ammunition. Zita is now actively working with the department and may be encountered by residents throughout the city.
