Dementia currently affects more than six million Americans and accounts for over 100,000 deaths annually, according to the National Institutes of Health. The condition causes progressive loss of memory, language skills, problem-solving abilities, and other cognitive functions.

With the aging U.S. population, researchers estimate that 42 percent of Americans over age 55 will eventually develop dementia, and new cases are expected to double by 2060. However, recent research indicates that many of these cases may be preventable.

Study Findings

A U.S.-based study examined more than 2,000 people between ages 60 and 79 who had normal cognitive function but were not maintaining particularly healthy lifestyles. Participants were enrolled in a structured program that included:
