Animal Shelters Face Rising Costs Amid Critical Overcrowding

Animal shelters across the country are experiencing a financial crisis as operating costs surge while facilities reach critical capacity levels.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control, like many shelters nationwide, has dealt with gradual price increases over recent years, but this budget cycle brought what staff describe as "a perfect storm" of cost escalations.

A key factor driving expenses is the cost of animal food. According to a recent U.S. International Trade Commission report, animal food ingredients in the U.S. are primarily sourced from China and currently face a 30% tariff rate. This rate could increase to 145% if the current trade agreement expires in November without renewal.

Veterinary services have also seen significant price increases, including vaccines and other medical supplies essential for animal care.

Melissa Knicely, who has worked at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control for over a decade, says the shelter is exploring different vendor options and alternative funding sources to manage rising costs. The facility has shifted its donation strategy to focus on Amazon wishlist items rather than traditional fundraising methods.

Despite financial pressures, shelters emphasize that pet adoption remains the most effective way the public can help address both overcrowding and financial strain on these facilities.
