Boys and Girls Club of Coachella Valley Builds Career Skills with Hands-On Construction Day

Construction jobs play a major role in the Coachella Valley’s workforce, and one local program is helping prepare the next generation of builders. The Boys and Girls Club of Coachella Valley partnered with local businesses to host a hands-on construction day, giving children the opportunity to learn basic building skills while working on fun projects.

Quinton Egson, president and CEO of the Boys and Girls Club, says the event perfectly reflects the organization’s mission. “It’s magical. It’s a great day for them, a great day for the volunteers, and a great day for Boys and Girls Club. This is what we’re about — building kids, having them build things, and building relationships,” he said. Egson emphasized that beyond constructing items like birdhouses, the children were gaining valuable knowledge they could carry into future careers.

Local experts worked side-by-side with the kids, guiding them through the safe use of tools such as drills and screwdrivers. Gretchen Gutierrez noted that for many of the children, this was their first time using any kind of tool. “They’re getting to learn how to use drills and screwdrivers and how to work together on a construction project,” she explained.

From building skills to building confidence, the day offered a glimpse into the possibilities the construction field holds. As the program wrapped up, the message was clear: Boys and Girls Club today, future builders tomorrow.
