Federal Court Weighs Future of Florida Immigration Facility
Closing arguments continued Wednesday in a federal lawsuit that could determine whether construction continues on a controversial immigration detention facility in Florida, dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz."
The environmental group Friends of the Everglades filed the lawsuit claiming the facility failed to undergo mandatory federal environmental review before construction began. The group argues this violates federal environmental protection laws.
The Florida Division of Emergency Management has disputed the claims, pointing to court documents showing the agency commissioned a preliminary environmental study. That study concluded construction would not significantly impact local wildlife species.
However, the legal challenge has already resulted in a two-week construction halt at the site. A ruling in favor of the environmental groups and a local Indian tribe involved in the case could extend that pause indefinitely.
