YouTube Tests AI Age Detection to Protect Teen Users

YouTube has begun testing new artificial intelligence technology designed to better identify underage users on its platform, regardless of the birthdate they provided when creating their account.

The AI estimation model analyzes multiple data points, including user activity patterns and account history, to determine if someone is likely under 18 years old. When the system identifies a potential minor, it automatically notifies the user and activates enhanced safety protections.

These protections include digital wellness features such as reminders to take breaks from viewing and prompts to go to sleep at appropriate times. The system also implements content safeguards that limit repeated exposure to certain types of videos that may be inappropriate for younger audiences.

The technology addresses a longstanding challenge for social media platforms: users frequently misrepresent their age during account creation to bypass age restrictions and parental controls.

Users flagged by the AI system can verify they are at least 18 by providing government-issued identification or credit card information to regain full platform access.

The pilot program is currently limited to American users as YouTube evaluates the effectiveness of the age detection technology before potentially expanding it to other markets.
