Energy Drink Containing Kratom Raises Addiction Concerns in Coachella Valley
A drink marketed as a natural way to boost energy, focus, and mood is sparking controversy in the Coachella Valley. The “Feel Free Classic” beverage, sold at convenience stores like Circle K, contains kratom — a plant native to Southeast Asia known for its opiate-like properties.
Medical experts warn that kratom has not been well studied and can be addictive. Dr. Olatunde Bosu of Desert Oasis Healthcare explained that in high doses, kratom can produce effects similar to opiates, including sedation and pain relief, and carries a high potential for dependence. “We’re finding a lot of patients take the substance thinking it’s all natural, only to develop a dependence and have difficulty stopping,” Bosu said, noting that some have required detox treatment.
At one Palm Desert Circle K, the store manager says the drink has been a strong seller, moving about 190 bottles a week since arriving four months ago. While the manufacturer, Botanic Tonics, promotes it as a plant-based herbal supplement, critics on social media say it can “trap” users in addiction.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently taking steps to restrict the sale of highly concentrated kratom products. Dr. Bosu cautions consumers to be wary of unregulated supplements. “Just because something is considered natural does not mean it’s safe,” he said. Reports of kratom use disorder have been on the rise over the last five to ten years.
